Calling All Governors

State governors have the authority to take steps to protect immigrants under their domain (thanks, Federalism!). For example, they can restrict the use of state funds allocated to arresting or detaining immigrants. Governors can also use their platform as public leaders and representatives to encourage the federal government to change its policies.

CALL YOUR GOVERNOR AND DEMAND PROTECTIONS FOR IMMIGRANTS

Ask your governor to take defined steps to protect immigrants in your state. If you need some help thinking of what to say, try the script below from 5Calls.org.

If you prefer to write a letter, check out their letter prompt, as well.

_____

Sample call script:

Hi, my name is [Name] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].

I’m calling to ask what steps [Governor’s Name] is taking to protect our immigrant community from aggressive deportation tactics of the Trump administration.

[IF CLEAR STEPS ARE IDENTIFIED]: Please tell the governor I thank them for standing for the immigrants in our state, and expect them to continue to resist Trump’s agenda. Thank you for your hard work answering the phones.

[IF UNKNOWN OR CLEAR STEPS ARE NOT IDENTIFIED]: I urge the governor to take action in supporting and protecting the immigrant communities in our state. We have undocumented immigrants who are productive and valued members of our community and I demand [he/she] shield them from the Trump agenda. Thank you for your hard work answering the phones.

_____

Sample letter: Demand fiscal accountability. The federal government does not reimburse local authorities for ICE detention requests, costing state and local governments millions of dollars.

As your constituent, I am writing this letter to urge you and your appropriate state agencies to prevent any and all state funds from being used to arrest or detain immigrants solely for immigration violations. Our state tax dollars should go to strengthening our state’s education system, not to unfunded federal immigration mandates.

Immigrants of all statuses are valuable members of our community and it is a waste of our policing time and resources to assist ICE.

Please reply to this letter with an outline of the steps you will be taking to prevent my state tax dollars from being spent on ICE enforcement activities.
