Student loan debt, that is.
My mom used to always say 'no one can take away your education,' and that is true. But now House Republicans are developing a tax bill that would take away the option for service-minded millennials with student loans to have those loans forgiven after 10 years of work in a public interest job.
More from the Hill and the Wall Street Journal:
A bill from House Republicans would end a program that forgives student loans for graduates who enter public service, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.
The GOP bill to reauthorize the Higher Education Act, introduced by Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) on Friday, would eliminate the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, which erases student debt for those who work for qualifying employers after making payments for 10 years.
The qualifying employers include government organizations and nonprofits, according to the federal student aid website. Those who volunteer for the Peace Corps or AmeriCorps are also eligible.
If you're like me, I always banked my career on this (maybe not the best choice). I planned on entering public interest law, and having some undergraduate and law school loans forgiven. But, the richie rich Congressmen strike again.
If you like in North Carolina, harangue your Representative Virginia Foxx to reconsider her detrimental bill. Give Millennials a chance!
